Whangaroa

Whangaroa

The Whangaroa Harbour is a jagged, bewitching harbour with a terrifyingly narrow entrance. Once boats have navigated their way into the harbour there are many quiet anchorages. The steep rocky volcanic outcrops create some exhilarating walks and stunning views.
an image Ecocruz The town of Whangaroa sits on the south side of the harbour, while Totora North is the fishing town to the north.

Nearby beaches Taupo Bay and Tauranga Bay are great surf spots in the right conditions, and provide a sandy alternative to the volcanic forms of the nearby harbour.

Further south you can dip off the state highway to the gentler beaches of Te Ngaere and Matauri Bays - popular day trips from the Bay of Islands, which we have outlined in more detail in our page on driving tours.
