Paihia is the perfect stepping stone into the Bay of Islands, and a wonderful place for people of all ages to visit. Almost all the Bay’s water activities depart from Paihia’s busy wharf, including fishing trips, day sailing, dolphin cruises, dive boats, the parasail boat and the regular Russell ferries.
The town itself is clustered around the maritime area. Marsden Road, along the waterfront, has cafes, bars and takeaways while on Williams Road you can find the pharmacy, post office, book shop and some great gift shops.
With a newly developed green space on the waterfront, Horotutu - Our Place, Paihia now has a vibrant centre perfect for lazing about, enjoying a picnic or watching various performers over the summer months. In 2015 Paihia was awarded Community of the Year in the New Zealander of the Year awards and continues to prosper as the community works towards a goal of being an exceptional place to live, work and visit. If you are interested in community ownership and placemaking Paihia is a world leader in this new urban design process and offers a variety of spaces that have been made over by the community.
You should also take time to visit the historical William House with its well-kept gardens; it now houses the library, regular art exhibitions and opens on to the village green which hosts regular artisan markets and a weekly farmer's market.
To the south of town you’ll find the lively Kings Road, complete with bars, live music and a number of quality, affordable hostels. On the beachfront you’ll find kayak, paddleboard, jet-ski and boat hire options a-plenty.
In terms of accommodation you are spoilt for choice, with a multitude of motels and hotels, hostels, apartments and holiday parks to choose from. All of these can be booked right now online. Or you can email us - we can give you advice if you’re not sure what’s right for you.
