Kauri Forest

Learn of legends, gods & myths at Waipoua Forest - the best preserved and largest of the remaining Kauri Forests in New Zealand. This is the domain of Tane Mahuta, the “Lord of the Forest” who is the largest of these ancient trees.

Puketi Forest & its 15,000 hectares contains magnificent stands of kauri and a rich ecological diversity. The Department of Conservation provides forest huts, cabins and camping facilities and walks in the forest. Enjoy the native flora and fauna, the night walk encounter - observing the nocturnal wildlife such as Wetas and Kiwi. Or get a fascinating insight into early NZ at the award winning Kauri Museum in Matakohe.
